Bilingual Signs Installed in Schools

Installing signs in your school in both English and Māori:

  • promotes learning opportunities and
  • encourages people to use te reo Māori.

As a board of trustees, you can use the Ministry’s bilingual list of words for rooms, buildings and services to help choose your signs (see below for this list).

5YA Bilingual Sign Funding NZ

Funding is now available for te reo Māori/English signs from the Ministry of Education. Safety Signs NZ can help you navigate the process to get the funding needed to ensure your school signs are appropriate for your region, Including putting you in touch with approved translators, should you need one.

How to access 5YA funding for your school:

You can set up an individual 5 Year Agreement (5YA) funding project to install signs but it's more cost effective to do the work as part of another 5YA funding project, like modernizing a technology block.

5YA funding information - https://education.govt.nz/school/funding-and-financials/funding/5-year-agreement-funding/

A stand-alone project to install bilingual signs is a priority 3 project. Refer to 10 Year Property Plans for information on work priorities.
